Does Plaid offer debt collection services?
No. Plaid is not a debt collector and does not offer debt collection services.
Plaid is a technology company that helps apps and financial institutions connect to your bank accounts and move money securely, with your permission. Companies that do collect debts—like lenders or debt collection agencies—may use Plaid to help you pay from your bank account, but they are the ones collecting the debt, not Plaid.
How Plaid is involved (and how it isn’t)
What Plaid does:
- Helps you securely connect your bank account to an app or service you choose
- Lets that app verify your account and, in some cases, initiate payments you authorize (for example, an ACH payment)
- Provides guidance to Plaid’s business customers about their own legal and compliance obligations, including if they engage in debt collection themselves
What Plaid does not do:
- Plaid does not own your debts or decide what you owe
- Plaid does not set payment plans, interest, or fees
- Plaid does not call, text, or message you to pressure you to pay a debt
- Plaid does not identify as Plaid Financial Services
- Plaid does not threaten to garnish your wages or seize your property
Why you might see Plaid’s name when a debt is involved
You might see Plaid mentioned even though we are not the debt collector. For example:
- A debt collection agency or lender might let you pay a balance using your bank account through Plaid, instead of a card.
- If a payment processed via Plaid fails or is returned, you might receive an email from Plaid explaining that a prior payment did not go through and offering a way to complete it.
In these situations, Plaid is helping with the payment, but the underlying debt and any collection activity belong to the business (for example, your lender, service provider, or their collection agency).
Who to contact about a debt or collection notice
If you have questions about:
- How much you owe
- Why you’re being contacted
- Payment plans, interest, or fees
- Legal notices or threats related to a debt
Contact the lender, service provider, or debt collection company that contacted you. They control the account, set terms, and are responsible for any collection activity.
If you:
- Believe a payment email from Plaid might be phishing, or
- Have questions about Plaid’s role in a specific payment
you can reach out to Plaid Support through our Help Center for help confirming whether a message is legitimate and understanding how Plaid was involved in that payment flow.
